FOR SALE: FULL OWNERSHIP, OR
FRACTIONAL OWNERSHIP (SHARES) ON OFFER

After serving us well on our Indian Ocean voyage, Chamchela is currently lying to anchor in the Kilifi Creek Boatyard, with the boatyard staff as well as two good friends looking after her. (See the History page for more backstory.) Our own intention was to either go further east, Thailand etc, or to bring her round to the Med - now depending on discussions with new partners. We're open to suggestions. The Caribbean is also very appealing!

Once we had left Chamchela in Kenya and returned to the UK, we started a publishing company. To raise funds we put her up for sale, but the enquiries we did get made us realize we really hated the idea of parting with her entirely. However, we still need funds - both for the business and to do more with Chamchela - so we are now looking EITHER for a full sale, OR for like-minded people who'd like fractional ownership in her - up to 6 shares are on offer in 8% portions. In other words, you can purchase up to 48% of her, in almost-but-not-quite 1/12th portions.

(Pricing is further down the page. Please read the whole page!)

Once we have the first two shares purchased, Andrew will be flying out to Kenya to tidy up our life-clutter, fit new standing rigging and a new mainsail, liferaft, and heads, and do a few more bits and pieces more to make her more user-friendly for the new part-owners. Because we are so busy with the publishing company, we aren't going to be able to do much sailing in the next couple of years, so this is an ideal opportunity for someone who fancies some sailing in the Indian Ocean in the mean time (or to bring her round to the Med or head for the Far East if you prefer!)

We are quite laid-back people, and are hoping to meet others who, like us, want the chance to bum around on a lovely "good old boat", helping here and there with TLC when necessary, sharing the costs of her mooring etc. We don't want much from life; just a safe, solid boat. Chamchela is not a rich man's plaything; she is a cruiser's home, a liveaboard, with all that goes with that. She's equipped as a small household would be, but not in a fancy way - although we are very open to improvements, additions, suggestions. We are very happy if our new partners want to add to her inventory, to make themselves more comfortable - we're just saying that currently, she's not a gin-palace. She's our friend; like a cherished old coat, she fits us well but the cuffs and collar aren't mink. :-)

Chamchela is an excellent boat, with a great layout down below, very comfortable, light and airy. She is fast, with a tried and trusted pedigree, and very sea-kindly. Most recently, she has carried us through the horrible Aghulas current and across the ocean to Mayotte, and then to East Africa. She is safe, comfortable, and solid, and we know that if we were to sell her and then try later to get a replacement, we could never replace her with a boat that would suit us as well. (Please note that part of any shared ownership agreement must be that if either party wants to sell their shares, the other MUST have first option on them, at current reasonable value.)

Kenya is fantastically situated as a cruising base. These are some of the best sailing grounds in the world; from Kilifi you launch straight off into the wonderful cruising areas of the Indian Ocean - the Seychelles, Maldives, Chagos, Comoros, Mayotte, Madagascar, Reunion, Sri Lanka, and so on - all the way across to Thailand and Malaysia! (But no, not further north; pirates are rife north of the border with Somalia, and we don't believe it would be wise to go up into the Red Sea either, through Arab territories, especially flying a British flag! lol!)

Kenya itself is absolutely beautiful, and very cheap to visit. If you are interested in our beloved boat, a trip to Kenya will be the experience of a lifetime. Combine looking at Chamchela with some deep sea big game fishing, incredible scuba diving and snorkelling on the coral reefs, safaris to see the Big Five in the Tsavo and Masaai Maara game reserves. Do some sailing in a dhow; visit the ancient Arab slave trading sites at Lamu Island (the first place on the East Coast occupied by the Sultan of Oman at the beginning of his empirical reign here) - and then cross the border into Tanzania and spend a few days making the rather tough walk to the top of Mount Kilimanjaro, to see snow on the equator. The Serengetti game reserve is fantastic, especially if you are here at the time to see one of the 7 New Wonders of the World - the migration of millions of wildebeeste and other game across the Rift Valley! And Zanzibar and Pemba islands are also a must-see, of course.

BUYING INTO CHAMCHELA:

Value when fit: We believe that after finishing her refit Chamchela could sell for at least £60,000 (probably much more). We personally would envisage spending around £10,000 to completely get her fit to our standards. Therefore her current actual value before completing a refit is at least £50,000.

Full Ownership: Because she needs that TLC, and because of our financial situation and our need to bring in cash flow for our business, and our realisation that her current lying in Kenya makes things more difficult for potential buyers, we are offering Chamchela at well below her full value. For an outright sale we are asking £40,000, very negotiable.

Fractional Ownership is also offered in almost-one-twelfth (1/12th) proportions, up to 6 shares. Each fractional share would be 8%, thus all 6 shares would lead to a total of 48% ownership. This would mean what it implies - you'd share the joys and responsibilities with us, and the running costs, to the value of your shares. Therefore, based on a fit value of around £55,000, each share of 8% is being sold at £4,500. This would buy you one month of bliss a year - for up to 8 people - that's £150 per night. Even for just 4 of you, that's only £37.50 a night each! For 8, it's half that - £18.75 each.

Please take a look at her inventory and specs, and see whether you think she's what you're looking for. If so, before agreeing any part-ownership deal we would want to get to know you; it's essential that we are like-minded, that we like each other, and that we trust each other with the boat itself. Far less important of course if you want to purchase outright.

We're looking forward to meeting you!
